Accessible handle and sill

Introducing our new accessible sliding door

Packed full of inclusive design features for easy use, independence, and security

We’re thrilled to announce the launch of our newest product: the A&L accessible sliding door.

With a range of inclusive design details, the door is purpose engineered to support people with disabilities to enjoy easier access, security, and independence at home.

Designed and thoroughly tested in close consultation with independent assessors, the new A&L accessible sliding door is easy to use, cost effective to install, and compliant with a wide range of accessibility standards.

Easy to use

The accessible sliding door is simple to unlock and open with one hand, making things easier for people with dexterity or strength challenges. Additionally, the easy-open design is simple to use with one hand for people using a mobility aid—like a cane, crutches or a wheelchair—who may already have a hand occupied.

Cost effective and efficient to install

The design of the door eliminates the need for costly commercial sub-framing, plumbed drainage, or drainage gates.

Compliant with a wide range of standards

The accessible sliding door is compliant with important access and inclusion standards, including:

Considered design features to make life easier for everyone

Every aspect of the new sliding door is designed with accessibility in mind. Some of the more notable features include:

Easy, comfortable sliding

The door is designed to manage operating loads in line with AS1428.1, the Australian Standard for access and mobility.

Contrasting easily identifiable glass

The glass panels within the door feature a full-width non-transparent contrasting visual motif. This makes the panes easier to identify for people with low vision and prevents any accidental contact with the glass.

Easy access whether the door is open or closed

The door handle is designed with an extra-large 60mm clearance from the wall or glass pane, so it’s easier to get a hold of in any position. Bump stops also restrict the sliding panel from opening too far, ensuring it’s never too far away to reach.

Accessible Door Sill

The flat sill provides a step-free entrance when rebated or ramped, eliminating safety concerns and making it easier to navigate in and out of the home.

An easy-to-use D-shaped handle

A larger, ergonomic grip area is helpful for people with dexterity challenges and is inclusive for people who need to use a different gripping style. Additionally, there’s a large gap between the handle and the glass surface of the sliding door, so it’s easy to freely grab and operate.

The snib lock within the handle is also raised by 45mm so it’s easier to identify and use.
